Chapter Twenty

I thought maybe Alerick would be mad at me for wrecking the room but he tipped his head back and laughed. His Adam’s apple jumped up and down the column of his thick, stubble-darkened throat and I watched it tick, as though hypnotized. The sound was a rich baritone that made my nipples bead and me squirm when my core pulsed. His face was bathed in happiness, making him look years younger and more carefree as the mantle of Alpha dropped from his shoulders. He went from sexy-handsome to devastating, and I couldn’t pull my gaze away from his face.

I pressed my thighs together and wrapped my arm about my breasts, trying to hide the way my nipples hardened with interest. I didn’t need to be aroused by Alerick’s laughter, but the sound was so free and joyful I couldn’t help it when my own mouth tipped up.

Eike’s chest thrummed, and it took me a moment to understand that his laughter joined with Alerick’s. Eike wound his arms around me. I didn’t know what he was doing until he hugged me and kissed my bare shoulder.

“You are a true blessing, Serafine.” Eike spoke so spontaneously, so honestly, that the truth of his words sunk into me.

He really thought I was a blessing.

I peered behind me to make sure, looking for the lie, the deception, but there was none. Eike smiled at me, his eyes dancing with warmth, and a strange flutter rolled through my stomach. My veins pulsed and in my mind’s eye, I saw the golden light that had come off the tight ball zing through my veins. I wouldn’t be surprised that if I bled, it would be liquid gold instead of crimson, so powerful the light was inside me. The light infused with joy so contagious that a sound came out of me I didn’t recognize.

I thought something was wrong with me at first. The sound was so foreign, but a light bubbly feeling rose and swept away the heaviness in my chest. The sound came again and this time I couldn’t stop it. My mouth stretched, and the sound came out. The sound made me happy. So happy I didn’t want it to stop.

Alerick smiled at me, his eyes sparkling, the back of his fingers caressing my cheek as he watched me make the sound. “You are truly beautiful when you laugh, Little Mate.”

Is that what I was doing? Laughing? Eike tightened his hold, squeezing me for a moment before easing the tightness. I found I didn’t mind that. He hadn’t tightened his hold to capture me. He’d hugged me and…I liked it. I didn’t want to. Maybe it was the laughter or the strange joyous feeling inside me, but I found that I liked his arms about me. “You are truly beautiful full stop, Serafine.”

I stopped laughing, but the light-hearted feeling remained. I didn’t think it would. Well, I wouldn’t know. There was nothing to laugh about at the castle. Maybe I might laugh once more before Esoti would tighten my collar and I would have to go back.
